Many experts say you can exercise when you have a flare or sore joint, but with caution. If in doubt, check with your doctor.<br />

The amendment further directed the CDC to determine the scope of the HPV epidemic and to set up an education and prevention program for the general public and health providers.</p>
<p>The bill passed in the house but failed in the Senate. A revised version was later included as part of the final budget package for the year 2012. </p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">A.The medical term for &#8220;going down the wrong tube&#8221; is aspiration. We have a common tube (the pharynx, or throat) for eating and breathing. At the level of the vocal cords, this common pathway divides into the trachea (windpipe) and esophagus (swallowing tube). If food or drink goes into the trachea, the unfortunate victim coughs to try to clear the material from the airway. While this may be painful, pain is usually not the dominant symptom &#8212; cough is the most obvious symptom. Of course, if the aspirated material is big enough (a chunk of prime rib, for example), then the victim may not be able to breathe, may not even be able to cough. If there&#8217;s no one handy to apply an expeditious Heimlich maneuver, the victim may choke to death.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">A.No, if discomfort is the primary symptom, I doubt that we are dealing with aspiration. Pain suggests a problem in the pharynx or esophagus. What sort of problem? Here&#8217;s a partial list of possibilities:</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Infection or inflammation of the pharynx or esophagus. The common &#8220;sore throat&#8221; can be due to viral, bacterial or even fungal infection. (Thrush is an example of a fungal infection.) Sore throat can also be due to acute or chronic exposure to irritants such as alcohol, cigarette smoke or gastric contents (as in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD). Rarely, pain with swallowing &#8212; the medical term is odynophagia &#8212; may be due to a deep neck abscess. This is a potentially life-threatening infection.<br />
Tumors of the pharynx or esophagus. Such tumors commonly present with odynophagia and dysphagia (difficulty swallowing; the food &#8220;gets stuck&#8221;). Tumor is an uncommon explanation for these symptoms, but is obviously a worrisome possibility, especially if the tumor is malignant. Risk factors for cancer include tobacco use, alcohol use and advancing age.<br />
Motility disorders. &#8220;Motility,&#8221; in this context, refers to the ability of food or drink to move down the esophagus. Gravity helps, but gravity is neither necessary nor sufficient for an effective swallow. What IS necessary is a sequence of highly coordinated muscular contractions of the esophagus. Many conditions can alter esophageal motility. In some disorders, the esophageal muscles contract forcefully (spasm) in response to swallowed food or drink. This is often very painful. Esophageal spasm is treatable, but it must first be correctly diagnosed. Diagnosis of esophageal motility problems involves a careful history and physical examination by an appropriately trained physician (such as a gastroenterologist), followed by tests (such as an esophagram, or &#8220;barium swallow,&#8221; and esophageal manometry, in which a device measures pressures at various points within the esophagus).</p>

<p>Be familiar with your organization&#8217;s sexual harassment policies and procedures. If you feel you have been inappropriately touched or spoken to, immediately take the steps outlined by your employer, for problem resolution.</p>
<p>Avoid situations where you will be working alone for stretches of time, or after work, with employees of the opposite sex.<br />
Be sure that your actions and appearance reflect a professional, no-nonsense attitude in the workplace. </p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Functional health clubs aren&#8217;t always stylish. Everyone knows that harsh, florescent lighting, glaring white walls and floor-to-ceiling mirrors aren&#8217;t a recipe for a soothing atmosphere, but state-of-the-art design elements often take a back seat to equipment purchases, and ambiance makes way for economy. <span id="more-335"></span>Kathy Theofilos wanted to change this. Theofilos says that when she couldn&#8217;t find a club where she could get a great workout, massage and shower, and leave feeling as if fresh from a visit to a spa, she decided to create her own. The result: Oxygen Health &amp; Wellness, a fitness &#8220;boutique&#8221; complete with porcelain floors and buffed slate, grasscloth and silk wallcoverings, hi-tech lighting and sculpted pedestal sinks. Owner Theofilos can count her brainchild as a success; the retention rate is stable at 96 percent, and membership numbers hold steady at 300 (out of a possible 500).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The Oxygen concept isn&#8217;t just about putting a pretty face on fitness; Theofilos is married to a spine surgeon, who insisted that specific equipment be included before helping fund construction. As a result, a MedX Lumbar machine shares the floor with more traditional equipment. Spine-friendly Pilates instruction is also available to members; licensed trainers conduct sessions in a private Pilates suite, fullystocked with Reformers, Trapeze Tables and other equipment. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In 1998, a vaccine was introduced that reduces the risk of developing Lyme disease in the event the person is bitten by an infected tick. However, the vaccine is not recommended for the elderly or children. <span id="more-332"></span></p>
<p>Vaccination involves three injected doses in a 12-month period. But studies have indicated that the vaccine is not completely effective. Protection declines over time and re-vaccination may be necessary after several years.</p>
<p>Therefore, to protect yourself against this disease, avoid getting bitten by Ixodes ticks. Though it is impossible to completely eliminate the risk, it is certainly possible to decrease it. Methods of protection include wearing light colored clothing to make ticks more visible, tucking pants cuffs into socks, wearing long-sleeve shirts, and performing careful tick checks after exposure so that ticks can be removed before they can transmit the disease (up to 24 hours). Removing ticks should be relatively simple. The small size of this species of tick often makes the use of tweezers necessary.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.drugsboat.com/amoxicillin.html">They should be grasped and removed. More force will be necessary to remove deeply imbedded ticks. In addition to these mechanical measures, any insect repellent containing 30 percent DEET will be effective in decreasing tick attachment. </a></p>
<p>DEET has been used for many years and is safe and effective. One should avoid getting it in the eyes or mouth because it can be irritating, but otherwise there are no established side effects.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If your club is a corporate fitness center or has a segment of members with physically active jobs, a new study may have important ramifications for your members. The study (authored by James H. Dwyer, professor at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, Cheryl K. Nordstrom, Kathleen M. Dwyer, C.N. Bairey Merz and Anne M. Shircore), presented at the American Heart Association’s 41st Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention, found that work stress can nullify the cardiovascular benefits of a physically demanding job.<span id="more-328"></span></p>
<p>The three-year study followed 447 utility company workers between 40 and 60 years old. Researchers tracked the amount of physical activity workers got while at work, plus their leisure time exercise, and measured the thickness of their carotid arteries at the beginning and end of the study. The thickening of these arteries, which are found in the neck and carry blood to the brain, is thought to strongly correspond to plaque build-up in larger arteries.</p>
<p>Workers with the most physical activity at work also reported the most job stress, and were found to have more carotid thickening than less-active and less-stressed workers. One researcher stated, &#8220;If you think being physically active at work is helping your heart, think again if you also have workplace stress.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.firstaidkitbags.com/person-medium-business-general-workplace-first-cabinet-order-online-58028.html">The more positive news from the study was that subjects who exercised at least four times a week during their off time had less carotid thickening than subjects who exercised less.</a></p>
<p> Researchers pointed to the protective effects of exercise as the cause.</p>
<p>Based on the study’s findings, researchers recommend that, to prevent cardiovascular disease, people in their 40s and 50s should exercise four or more times per week with enough intensity to produce heavy breathing and sweating. It is also important to inform your members that workplace physical activity is not a substitute for exercise in their leisure time.</p>
