Heartburn and Cancer

Studies show that people who have chronic heartburn are more likely to develop a deadly cancer of the esophagus. Why? Heartburn occurs when the stomach acid “refluxes” or splashes back into the esophagus. Research suggests that acid irritates the esophagus and may lead to precancerous changes that can progress to cancer.
